ASGCA was formed in 1946 as the first professional organization of course designers in America. Robert Bruce Harris of Chicago was elected the first president and Donald Ross served as honorary president.

Ten of the 14 charter members of The American Society of Golf Course Architects were
in attendance at the first ASGCA Annual Meeting. Shown near the 18th green of Pinehurst
No. 2 are (left to right): William P. Bell, Robert White, William B. Langford, Honorary
President Donald J. Ross, President Robert Bruce Harris, Stanley Thompson,
William F. Gordon, Robert Trent Jones, William H. Diddel, and J.B. McGovern. Not
