of American Society of Golf Course Architects
Two distinguished members of the American Society of Golf
Course Architects, Lloyd
Clifton and Jerry
Matthews, were named Fellows at the Society’s
Annual Meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Clifton, a graduate of the University of Florida with a
degree in agriculture, is a long-time designer based in
Deland, Fla. Among the courses he has designed are: Hunters
Creek, Orlando, Fla.; Grey Oaks, Naples, Fla.; Highland
Creek, Charlotte, N.C.; Debary Plantation, Debary, Fla.;
and Plantation Bay, Ormond Beach, Fla.
Matthews, a Past President of ASGCA, makes Michigan his
base. He is a graduate of Michigan State University where
he earned bachelors degrees in landscape architecture and
urban planning and a master’s degree in urban planning.
Matthews is designer of the following layouts: Elk Ridge
Golf Course, Atlanta, Mich.; Bucks Run Golf Club, Mt. Pleasant,
Mich.; St. Ives Golf Club, Stanwood, Mich.; Hawk Hollow
Golf Course, Bath, Mich.; and The Jewel at The Grand Hotel,
Mackinac Island, Mich.
To achieve Fellow status, one must be an ASGCA member in
good standing for at least 10 years and have reached the
age of 70, making this a prestigious honor within ASGCA.
With the election of Clifton and Matthews, the number of
ASGCA Fellows stands at 22.
Candidates for Associate Membership in ASGCA complete a
rigorous multi-phase application process that includes peer
review of four completed courses, discussions with project
owners and a personal interview to assess the candidate’s
professional capabilities, design philosophies and ethical
standards.

Founded in 1946 by 14 leading architects, including Donald
Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the American Society of
Golf Course Architects is a non-profit organization comprised
of 180 golf course designers located throughout the United
States and Canada. Members are actively involved in the design
of new courses, the renovation of existing layouts, and issues
affecting the future of the game.
